It’s time to get FESTIVE and start the Christmas countdown!
This month we’re celebrating the centenary of acclaimed children’s author, Rosemary Sutcliff, author of classic tales such as Beowulf, Dragonslayer, The King Arthur Trilogy and The Sword and the Circle. These incredible stories have been much-loved by hundreds of children – why not introduce Rosemary’s amazing writing to your classes today?
For festive fun in the classroom, we have brilliant new resources to share, focused on the fantastic book by Catherine Doyle, The Miracle on Ebeneezer Street. Inspired by the classic story, A Christmas Carol, the resource features three lessons focused on Christmas past, present and future with activities exploring themes of family, kindness and Christmas. Ideal for supporting literacy learning AND adding to the Christmas spirit in your school! Download the resource pack here.
You can also revisit festive favourites such as The Snowman, reimagined by Michael Morpurgo, The Christmasaurus by Tom Fletcher and use our festive-themed booklist to inspire Christmas reading. And don’t forget our brilliant Christmas Storytellers Show with amazing authors and illustrators beamed direct to your classroom in a show which will inspire your class to mix up ideas from different genres and forms in their own writing. Authors including Robin Stevens, David Solomons and Tom Fletcher will share their creative writing secrets with your pupils and there’s an exclusive interview with Diary of a Wimpy Kid creator Jeff Kinney and a draw-along of The Snowman!
Brand new this month, we have a whole bundle of brilliant resources created in partnership with Made by Dyslexia, which support literacy and learning using the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books (see our series list here) to capture the imagination. Designed as sequential units of work, the activities can also be used individually as inspiration for reading for pleasure. The pack includes extracts, audio, video, writing tips and templates with a range of activities to suit all learning styles. Download the pack here.
Don’t forget, there’s still time to enter the Hey Grandude competition inspired by the fabulous picture book by Sir Paul McCartney. WIN a personalised video message from Sir Paul McCartney himself! Encouraging children to stay in touch with their loved ones, they can enter by simply sending a digital postcard to their grandparent and share on a grown-up in their lives social media account using #GrandudePostcard, for a chance to win this exclusive prize. Find out more here.
Whatever you are doing to celebrate the festive season in your school, we wish you a safe and Happy Christmas!
