KS2 Resource Pack: The Lost Spells – An Explorer’s Guide

What’s the story?

The Lost Spells introduces a beautiful new set of natural spell-poems and artwork by beloved creative duo Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris. Each “spell” conjures an animal, bird, tree or flower — from Barn Owl to Red Fox, Grey Seal to Silver Birch, Jay to Jackdaw — with which we share our lives and landscapes. Moving, joyful and funny, The Lost Spells above all celebrates a sense of wonder, bearing witness to nature’s power to amaze, console and bring joy.

This resource pack includes:

Wonderful activities and ideas celebrating the magic of nature and language which can be used standalone or consecutively as a cross-curricular scheme of work in English, Science, Art, PSHE and to support research skills. Each section takes one of the animals or items from nature featured in each spell, and invites children to Seek, Find, Speak, Write and/or Create their response with extracts and illustrations from the book to support and inspire learning:

Fox

Jay

Moth

Heartwood

Beech

There are creative and research challenges and also suggestions of further reading to support learning with a glossary and a bibliography. This would be a brilliant resource to celebrate the natural world, generate ideas for creative writing and encourage conservation.
