KS2/KS3 TEACHING NOTES: PONY by R.J.Palacio

What’s the story:

When Silas Bird wakes in the dead of night, he watches powerlessly as three strangers take his father away. Silas is left shaken, scared and alone, except for the presence of his companion, Mittenwool, who happens to be a ghost. But then a mysterious pony shows up at his door, and Silas knows what he has to do. So begins a perilous journey to find his father – a journey that will connect him with his past, his future, and the unknowable world around him.

These teaching notes have been written by teachers at the CLPE (Centre for Literacy in Primary Education) to provide schools with ideas to develop comprehension and cross-circular activities around this text.  They build on our work, supporting teachers to use quality texts throughout the reading curriculum.  These notes will encourage a deep reading of and reflection on Pony, which may happen over a series of reading sessions, rather than just in one sitting. These notes are particular suitable when working with pupils in Years 6 or 7.

Please note that this pack does not include the text itself or text excerpts – the text will need to be acquired separately.
