World Book Day Special: Stories for Change

This special World Book Day show celebrates the importance of books and shows how stories have the power to change the world. From books and vlogs to newspapers, biographies and rap lyrics, stories are everywhere and we’re on a mission to inspire kids to make their voices heard and start their stories.

Host Jen Wakefield takes viewers on a whistle stop tour of different forms of stories, and former Waterstones Children’s Laureate Chris Riddell will be leading the draw-along and challenging children to think about what they’d do if they were a laureate!

Here’s what else you will experience:

  • Essential creative writing tips to turn family anecdotes into funny fiction with one of the most important British Asian personalities, Humza Arshad
  • An interview with Karyn Parsons (who teachers may recognise as The Fresh Prince of Bel Air’s Hilary Banks) about how her grandmother’s story inspired her book about segregated North Carolina
  • How to interview extraordinary people for biographies and report writing with journalist and former Newsround presenter Nelufar Hedayat

Celebrating 20 years of the Waterstones Children’s Laureate!

Did you know that the Children’s Laureate was created in 1999 by Poet Laureate Ted Hughes and children’s author Michael Morpurgo? It is awarded once every two years to an eminent children’s book writer or illustrator to honour outstanding achievement in their field. We’re thrilled to be working with BookTrust this year and the laureates will be taking a star turn in each of this year’s shows.
